Enhancing Civic Engagement and Tourism

The Connective's role:

Connect, Catalyze

Project details:

The Connective is driving the exploration of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies to transform historical tourism and economic development. These dual applications highlight the adaptability of tools like augmented reality across urban challenges and opportunities.

In Partnership with the Grand Canyon University Capstone program, a team of interdisciplinary students will work with the City of Scottsdale Economic Development and Citizen Service teams in facilitating the foundations of an augmented reality experience in Old Town Scottsdale.

Goals:

  • Historical Tourism: By digitally layering content over existing physical sites, the city can meaningfully add content to existing sites where extensive physical remodeling may otherwise be required.

  • Economic Development: By creating an engaging public attraction, we hope to draw visitors to specific locations to stimulate activity in previously underutilized or under visited portions of Old Town.

Process:

  • Technology Assessment: The students will first identify a technology stack that best engages the public with minimal friction and barriers to entry

  • Deployments: The project will include at least one content deployment around a historical site of the city's choosing.

By partnering with technology providers and local stakeholders, The Connective ensures these initiatives align with public sector goals, creating a replicable model for other cities.
